Frequently Asked Questions.

If you don’t find the information you need below, please get in touch here with any queries.

How can I access my Purpose session on the day?

You will be sent a private Zoom link once you have booked a session (which you can do here). I would recommend that you access the call via your laptop / desktop, in a room where you can speak openly and without distraction. You can use Zoom on your phone if you would prefer, though a laptop or desktop would be preferable.

What if I need to cancel or rebook a session?

As long as you give me more than 24 hours' notice, you can reschedule or cancel your session with no charge (there will be a link to do this in your original confirmation e-mail). If it is within 24 hours, regrettably this is non-refundable because it is unlikely I will be able to fill the slot at short notice.

How many sessions should I have?

It always starts with the first session as a one-off. We usually cover a lot of ground in the first session, and this can occasionally be sufficient. However, the best value comes from agreeing to a course of sessions, and many people benefit from a series of 10 or more depending on different circumstances. It is important to remember that there is no minimum number, and you won't be tied into any long-term agreements beyond what feels right for you.

If you have a budget for Wellbeing and are considering providing Purpose sessions to people in your team as a company benefit, then different programmes are available (for example, a dedicated programme to support and develop the Leaders in your business). Is this the same as Counselling?

I am a qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor and have experience of working with people with a range of emotional difficulties and personal challenges. That said, Purpose sessions are open to everyone. You don’t need to be going through something specific in order to ‘qualify’. Purpose sessions are for people with stressful jobs, who are finding it hard to sustain performance at work whilst also dealing with everyday life at home, maintaining personal and professional relationships, while also looking after their own wellbeing.

Everyone is different, and I am happy to work with anyone who wants to make more sense of their life and to feel empowered to make good decisions. However, these are not intended as deep psychotherapy sessions (and it should be noted that I am not a licenced therapist in the US). In some circumstances, such as if someone has a diagnosed mental health disorder, or needs a professional diagnosis, I might recommend that you seek professional help alongside our work together.

What are your Qualifications?

I have a first-class degree in Psychology from Oxford University, as well as a diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling from Chichester Counselling Service (CCS). In addition, I am a member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and have completed training in Time-Limited Therapy and Client Assessment. What makes me unique, and gives Purpose sessions real value, is that I also have over 17 years' experience in recruitment, 15 of which were in leadership roles and the last 7 were as Managing Director. As such, I have a good understanding of running a successful business, leading teams of sales and non-sales staff, and helping people with their personal and professional development within a fast-paced and pressurised environment.

What are your Credentials?

Being a member of the BACP, all parts of Purpose Mentoring comply with the BACP’s code of practice, which covers items such as confidentiality and impartiality.

Additionally, since April 2024, Purpose Mentoring has been a Bronze Partner of The Recruitment Network (TRN). TRN is the leading network for professional recruiters, providing recruitment leaders with the tools, advice, guidance, training and support to maximise the performance, productivity and profitability of their recruitment businesses.

Furthermore, Purpose Mentoring is fully insured to provide counselling and mentoring in the UK and EU, and to provide business coaching and mentoring in the USA.

What makes this different to therapy / counselling / Time to Talk / Relate / CBT or other forms of support?

As well as being a qualified and experienced counsellor, I have over 17 years' experience of working in recruitment, which is a fast-paced and pressurised industry. My business background, and experience of leading teams, gives me a somewhat unique perspective as a mentor. If you want to talk about issues with colleagues, different business management tools and corporate jargon, you won't need to explain much to me, which means we can make a lot of progress quite quickly.

What if my employer is paying for my sessions?

There are different ways in which sessions can be booked if it is part of a corporate solution. Usually this will already have been organised between me and your HR department / senior leadership. However, if you are unsure what to do then please e-mail me at steve.twinley@purposementoring.com.

I am interested in offering Purpose sessions to my team as an employee benefit. How do I go about doing this?

This is great to hear! I work in partnership with the HR and senior leadership teams of both larger and smaller businesses, and I can tell you that if you invest in mentoring for your team then it will mean so much to them. It is a way to show that you care about your team as people, while also recognising and respecting that there is a professional boundary between you.

Corporate solutions are completely customisable depending on your needs. The first thing will be for us to meet online (you can book a 30-minute call here), so that you can tell me more about your team setup, the challenges that some individuals might be experiencing (without giving away any specifics) and how these challenges are impacting on performance. We can then discuss a personalised plan, whether this is to agree on a specific number of sessions / individuals, or to look at more of an ongoing retainer arrangement. I will be happy to meet with any key stakeholders, including HR and senior leadership, to answer all questions. Speaking with a few people in your organisation will also help me to understand more about your company values, which will be a big help.

Typically, once it has been agreed that you will offer Purpose sessions for your team, your team members will book their sessions with me directly. I can meet people either during or outside of working hours.

It is important to note that my obligation will be to the person attending the Purpose session, not the business. Because everything I discuss with the person is 100% confidential, I will only be able to confirm to you that someone has attended a session - I will not be able to divulge what has been discussed with them.
